Union Jack Necklace Tutorial

Make this necklace from scraps of fabric. Stay traditional with red,white, and blue--
or go funky with other colors.

The beauty of the Union Jack works in any color palette.

*Get some Wonder Under at your local fabric shop. It's going to be your best friend once you use it.

I have used an entire bolt in about 6 months. It's super versatile and easy to use.

Here we go:

1. Cut your backing piece.

Mine is plain old muslin, cut at 5x2 inches.

Cut a piece of Wonder Under at 2.5x2 inches as well.

 (It's folded next, don't worry you won't be sporting a huge belt buckle on your chest.)

2. Fold the muslin in half short sides together and press. Tuck in the wonder under piece and fuse this muslin bit together by pressing for 10 seconds.

 It gives a wonderful strength to the backing for structure.

3.Collect some scrap bits and cut tiny bars, mine are 1/4 inch wide and 2.5 inches long.

Here I mixed fabrics for the English St George's cross (red) and the crosses of St Andrew and St Patrick (both red & white dots). 

4. Decide what your "background" or foundation color will be. Mine is navy gingham. Cut it to fit your muslin piece, and fuse it on with wonder under. You will stitch over it later, so don't fret about staying power.

5. Fuse the X bars on with wonder under and then stitch around the edges for added dimension and texture.

These bars will represent the St Andrew and St Patrick portion of the flag.

Stitch slowly.

6. Fuse the cross on (red for St George) and then stitch around the edges.

7. Optional step--- I added a pretty backdrop to the back of my pendant. I fused it on with wonder under so the stitching was concealed.

8. Get a necklace bail from a craft shop and E6000 glue (or other super glue you trust).

Glue the bail on

in the exact middle of the cross.

Let it cure for 24 hrs before wearing. Thread ribbon or a ball chain through the bail and sport your new accessory!
