Fast Vinyl Santorini Tote sewing tutorial

Summer = color pOp  fun, and blue skies ---

and also BIG beach bags with swim suits and towels, sunglasses,  and a great book. RIGHT?! :D

Lots of venues now are asking people to bring clear bags for security reasons. This is the world we live in, so let's adapt and remain positive. There is no other choice.

My answer to all that is to sew these large vinyl bags with zipper top closure in no time at all.

These totes are based on my Santorini Bag pattern here in my Etsy shop.

Colorful vinyl fabric available here.

I use all the same measurements as the regular size bag, omitting a lining and pockets. You can use any style strap or handle you choose.

The normal handles and strap applications are outlined in my pattern.

The strap application on the orange bag (pictured above) is outlined in this tutorial here- supplementing fabric rather than cork.

I just love being able to see everything at a glance.

No freak outs about losing my sunglasses or water bottle or (gasp) a swim suit bottom! LOL

Yes it's happened ...

My ten year old is very patient with me and helped film this tutorial for you-- now understand this was our first time doing this, so it's a little bumpy at times. I've since bought some gear that will allow me to film from a bird's eye view--so subsequent videos will look better. BUT STILL, it shows the basic steps.

It's 19 minutes in length, from start to finish.

Plus I show changing out my sewing feet- which foot I use for what step and so on.

*Also- it was VERY hot this day. My little room was boiling. Today of course it's back down into the 40's and 50's. Such is life!

But I'm still UPBEAT! :D

Note-- you will need a teflon sewing foot OR non-stick foot. This foot is a must in any vinyl sewing arsenal. SOME people have luck with scotch tape on the bottom of their regular sewing foot, but I don't. TOOLS MAKE a DIFFERENCE.

Ask anyone who started out with a sewing machine from "wherever"--you know, the plastic $100 machine you thought was a good deal. YEAH right!  I can say this from experience-- buy the better machine. Finance it, ask, beg, or borrow--get the good machine. It's life changing.

Mine is NOT fancy- but it's  work horse.  I use a Bernina 1008 daily with no problems sewing vinyl, leather, denim, or any other thick fabric.

I've also heard good things about Juki here.

Just don't buy a plastic Singer machine, ok? It will make you cry.

As for zippers-- I love using handbag zippers (long pull 4.5) because of their wider zipper tape. The larger handles on the ends allow easier grasping too.

I get all my zips from Zip It on Etsy
Use coupon code "hungryhippie" for 10% off your order.

New to this vinyl stuff? We have some easy zipper cases kits here in the shop for a small project trial.

You can choose your color : clear, tangerine, lemon, blueberry, raspberry, grape, or lime.

In other news...

Here are some things I've been crushing on this week:

Somewhat Simple .    OH EM to the G---oddess!!!

These AQUAZZURA 6" platform STRIPED leather shoes- made in Italy. Stripes are LIFE ITSELF.

I'd fall over in two seconds in these, but man- they are FABULOUS!

Reminds me of Ziggy Stardust.

I've been obsessed with the Netflix documentary line up for the past few months. Recent watch-worthy shows are:

1. COOKED (Incredibly interesting show on the origin of foods around the world and why we feel sick now with mechanization and chemical additives. I've been baking our own bread weekly because of this show.)

2. Bobby Kennedy for President -- A great perspective--not just a "oh he's so great doc" but rather discussion on Bobby's darker and politically conniving side too. WE ALL have it, don't you think? That darker side...

3. The 70's-- love this so much. I've got The 80's in my next line up. I was born at the end of the 70's but I tend to identify a lot with the bohemian vibe of this era. They talk about all the unrest, the great TV shows, the political climate of the US, and much more.

4. Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown : Not just a food show- he talks about the political upheavals around the world, and how it's affected the people and their diet--- super interesting.

5. Queer Eye - a "makeover" show that made me cry! They don't do just physical makeovers, but dive into what is going on underneath that would make a person de-value themselves. I LOVE this show.

Of course when I saw this pink blue tooth speaker on Amazon it was ALL I could do to click away!

I guess that's it for now. I hope you have a fun-filled weekend and make lots of creative time for yourself! It's self care!

XOXO
